Artist Statement

While photography means everything to me, I don’t really think of myself as a photographer – at least not in the conventional sense of the word. Nowadays, a photographer is usually expected to document reality: events that actually occurred, or people and objects that actually existed. I try to capture what is not there — a distortion of reality, a dreamy state of mind, an alternative universe, or a place that may look at once familiar and alien to our eyes.

Ever since I was a kid, the primary drive behind my artistic pursuits has always been that of awe – a simple, universal and instinctive desire to honor a brief moment that means an eternity to our lives. I often feel that God, if such an entity exists, should reside as an inseparable part within each one of us. Whenever I’m awestruck by an idea or something I see, those feelings would resonate somewhere within me, rather than falling “from the above”.

In a sense, what I’m really doing with my photographs is to build a connection, or rather a conversation, with some kind of natural mystic resting among us. The microcosms created within my camera reflect the unique way in which I interact with awe-inspiring moments and contemplate their spiritual significance. I believe that one needs to see the world with not just their eyes, but feel it with their hearts as well.

I don’t know if I’ll ever become spiritual enough to follow a religion. But until I do, photography is as close as I’ll get to having a spiritual practice.
